Where Japanese Craft Meets Modernist Design

About Us

Founded in Japan in 2019 as @modernistikebana on Instagram, Japan Modern is the world’s first specialist dealer devoted exclusively to vintage Japanese modernist ikebana vessels.

Ikebana is the 700-year-old Japanese art of structured floral arrangement, defined by line, form, and negative space.

In the mid-20th century, modernism and avant-garde ideas transformed traditional ikebana pottery into sculptural and experimental forms. Many of the kilns that produced these works are now defunct; their vessels are no longer made.

We curate and globally place only these post-war modernist ikebana vases — singular Japanese works of sculptural presence.

This genre has never been formally defined in academic literature. For clarity, we introduced the term “modernist ikebana” to describe these post-war vessels shaped by mid-century modernist influence — a designation now widely used to identify this distinct category of vessel object.

Each vessel is measured, documented, and water-leak tested before shipping from Japan with full tracking. Since 2019, thousands have entered private collections across 19 countries and have been placed with leading mid-century retailers, florists, ikebana instructors & students, artists, and private collectors worldwide.
