White Twist

A tall sculptural vase composed of two twisting vertical planes that divide into forked apertures at the top. Its faux marble white surface emphasizes the sharp folds and elongated, asymmetrical silhouette. This glaze was made in-house by mixing multiple white glazes. Japan Modern interviewed the designer and maker of this iconic model.

This is a rare original vase made by a now-defunct kiln in Tokoname. This kiln no longer exists and surviving models are becoming rarer and harder to find. Japan Modern visited this former kiln and interviewed the family behind it. Their vases from last century were iconic and were an era defining trendsetter for modernism in ikebana vases last century.

Vintage pieces may show signs of age and prior use, including surface wear, glaze variation, firing irregularities, kiln marks, minor staining and other characteristics acquired over time. The photographs provide further detail on the individual character and condition of the piece.
