Green Tanuki
A vintage Japanese cast iron tanuki - the Japanese raccoon dog - reduced to a near-spherical body, attributed to Takaoka cast iron. Minimalist form with shallow circular eyes and a small projecting snout, its deeply recessed face contrasts with the rounded back. Mottled emerald green with scattered gold tones brings out the fine casting texture and highlights the folded form.
In Japanese folklore the tanuki is a shapeshifter and bringer of good fortune, prosperity and good cheer, often seen as a plump, jovial figure. Vintage pieces may show signs of age and prior use, including surface wear, finish and patina variation, casting irregularities, mould seams, minor rust or oxidation, staining and other characteristics acquired over time.
