White Winged

A low sculptural vase with a rounded central well and four sharply projecting lateral fins. Its pale speckled glaze softens the angular, wing-like geometry. Japan Modern interviewed the designer and maker of this vase and heard this faux marble glaze was developed in-house in their family kiln by mixing multiple white glazes.

This is a rare original vase made by a now-defunct kiln in Tokoname and retains the original kiln sticker. This kiln no longer exists and surviving models are becoming rarer and harder to find. Japan Modern visited this former kiln and interviewed the family behind it. Their vases from last century were iconic and were an era defining trendsetter for modernism in ikebana vases last century.

Vintage pieces may show signs of age and prior use, including surface wear, glaze variation, firing irregularities, kiln marks, minor staining and other characteristics acquired over time. The photographs provide further detail on the individual character and condition of the piece.
