White Abstract

A low biomorphic vase with a sweeping crescent-like body, broad oval well and smaller circular aperture. Designed for dual display, it can rest on its tripod feet or stand on its curved back with the apertures facing sideways, offering markedly different arrangement possibilities. Its softly mottled faux-marble surface was a signature glaze of the now-defunct kiln. During Japan Modern’s interview with its last CEO, he explained that this proprietary finish was mixed in-house from multiple white glazes. A rare surviving form with a distinctly sculptural, postwar-modernist presence.
