Beige Quartet

An exceptionally rare four-aperture vase, personally designed and made by a coveted modernist ceramic artist for one of Japan’s most significant now-defunct ikebana kilns. Raised on unglazed tripod feet, its substantial interconnected form belongs to the kiln’s sought-after beige series. Attribution is supported by firsthand interviews conducted earlier this year with both the artist and the kiln’s last CEO, giving the piece unusually clear provenance. The artisan who made this still has many large scale public artworks still on display in Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture. This collection-grade example is offered only because a duplicate remains in my private archive. Please consider acquiring this rare piece before I quietly return it to my private archive. 

The heavily applied glaze pools within the form’s valleys and settles irregularly around incidental surface indentations, revealing the spontaneity of its mid-century production. Consistent age-related crazing extends across the piece, reinforcing its perfectly imperfect and boldly unorthodox character.
