A 3.6kg heavy, square-fronted ikebana vase with a deep angled well and a circular void cut through the body from front to back. Mottled olive-green and charcoal glaze follows the whirlpool-like texture of the well and surrounding fascia, giving the form a brutally bold presence. This heavy and brutalist piece was part of a black and green series made in Shigaraki many decades ago. Even as a stand-alone sculpture, this is a visually arresting piece and demands attention as a striking brutalist object.
