Arguably the most recognised form in the modernist ikebana genre. Japan Modern coined the moniker “Bison Vase” in 2019 after encountering its muscular silhouette; the name has since entered the global vernacular among ikebana practitioners, dealers and collectors. Produced by a now-defunct kiln, this iconic model will appear on the cover of our forthcoming book on modernist ikebana vases.

This example has a glossy black-blue glaze with gold-painted detailing and retains its original, well-worn cardboard retail box. The gold finish appears to have been spray-applied after firing, either by the kiln or a previous owner—a practice historically used to embellish ikebana vessels for celebratory occasions. As a surface-applied finish, the gold may chip or wear through handling and friction. This is an inherent characteristic of the finish and should not be considered a product fault. Purchase constitutes acceptance that further loss of the gold finish may occur with use.

Vintage pieces may show signs of age and prior use, including surface wear, glaze variation, firing irregularities, kiln marks, minor staining and other characteristics acquired over time. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
